Corvias Program Offers Hope Amidst National Shortage of Half Million Skilled Trade Workers

Lincoln Technical Institute Also Selects Corvias as Employer of the Year

Warwick, RI (May 28, 2024) – Corvias Property Management (Corvias) team member Calvin Hernandez received an offer of employment from Corvias while still attending Lincoln Technical Institute (Lincoln Tech), one of the nation's leading providers of career training. He graduates in June with a certificate in electrical & electronic systems technology and NCCER. To support a talent pipeline and create awareness in the community, a unique partnership between Corvias and Lincoln Tech in Columbia, MD was established to help address the shortage in skilled trade workers.

With many workers retiring from the trades in recent years, demand is high for apprentice-level and skilled labor positions across the country. This includes trades such as plumbing, roofing, carpentry, electricity, and even general construction. Despite the construction industry needing to attract an estimated 546,000 additional workers, on top of the normal pace of hiring last year to meet the demand for labor, various reports show too few young people entered skilled labor trades. The application rate for other skilled trades such as plumbers, carpenters, and electricians also dropped by 49 percent between 2020 and 2022. Meanwhile, skilled trade employers posted over 200,000 job openings in just a single month in 2023.

To support the national need for workers in skilled trades and build a pipeline of talent, Corvias began collaborating with Lincoln Tech in 2023. The collaboration also supports its partnership at Fort Meade, Maryland, where Corvias Property Management is responsible for leasing, operations, and maintenance of more than 2,600 homes and four community centers across six residential communities.

As a result of participating in a program where Corvias maintenance technicians attend job fairs and classroom presentations, Hernandez learned of the opportunity to join the Corvias team. The purpose of these in-person sessions is to directly address students' preferences for gaining insights from professionals in maintenance technician roles. Students also discuss the advantages of pursuing a career with Corvias and emphasize the significance and impact of skilled trades.

“I chose to attend Lincoln Tech to grow my skills and I appreciate the opportunities this experience brought me,” said Hernandez. “I’m now part of a team where I get cross-training, great benefits, and a positive team environment,” he added.

In addition to professional development opportunities for its maintenance technicians attending events at Lincoln Tech and attracting valuable, experienced new team members through the program, Corvias also received recognition from Lincoln Tech as an Employer of the Year for 2023.

The Employer of the Year is awarded by Lincoln Tech’s Columbia, MD campus and is given annually to companies that actively hire Lincoln students, participate as advisory board members and engage in campus events, such as interview days, career fairs, lunch and learns, and classroom presentations.

“We take seriously our commitment to foster a work environment that empowers our team members to thrive and engage. We want them to experience impactful, meaningful work that challenges them to reach new heights,” said Corvias CEO, Chris Wilson. “When our employees feel fulfilled in their roles, they become the driving force behind our commitment to delivering award-winning customer service to the service members and their families who live in our communities.”
