Nearly a Century Later, Fort Bragg’s Historic Homes Begin a New Chapter

Corvias and the U.S. Army celebrate restoration as part of a broader commitment to Fort Bragg family housing modernization.

FORT BRAGG, N.C. (October 5, 2026) – Nearly a century after some of Fort Bragg’s earliest permanent homes were built, Corvias and the U.S. Army recently celebrated their next chapter with a ribbon-cutting ceremony and tour of the first of 21 residences being renovated and returned to service.

Brett W. Johnson, XVIII Airborne Corps Command Sergeant Major; Jeff Williams, Senior Vice President, Asset Management, Corvias; Lt. Gen. Gregory K. Anderson, Commanding General, XVIII Airborne Corps and Fort Bragg; and Heather Fuller, Regional Vice President, Corvias Property Management.

Originally built between 1928 and 1939, the homes are part of Fort Bragg’s Historic Pope neighborhood with distinctive architectural details including terra-cotta roofs, copper gutters, stucco walls, hardwood floors and basements. They are among 230 Fort Bragg homes designated as historic. Once renovated, they will provide modernized housing for junior enlisted Soldiers and their families, with the first family moving in following the ceremony.

“These residences are an important part of Fort Bragg’s history, but their greatest value is continuing to serve Soldiers and families who live in these homes,” said Col. Luke Wittmer, Fort Bragg Garrison Commander. “It is also about the team here that has worked hard to improve their quality of life. This renovation preserves history while ensuring we continue to meet the needs of today’s families and turn construction into a home they can be proud of.”

Restoring With Care

Rather than raze and rebuild, Corvias and the Army are preserving the homes’ historic character and modernizing them aligned to current construction practices. The top-to-bottom improvements include new roofs, updated kitchens and bathrooms, contemporary lighting and more.

“With homes of this age, we take special care throughout the renovation to protect the people doing the work and the families who will live here next,” said Denise Hauck, president of Corvias Military. “Before an historic home is returned to service, we ensure the work has been completed and validated to applicable health and safety guidelines so they will serve military families not just today but well into the future."

In addition to the historic renovation, Fort Bragg anchors one of Corvias' most significant current military housing modernization efforts: Project Homestead, a $91 million project delivering major renovations to the installation’s Hillcrest and Bataan neighborhoods, with roofing already completed on 543 homes and medium renovations more than 80 percent complete.

Supporting Families Through Transition

The ceremony also recognized the Corvias teams supporting Fort Bragg families every day. Col. Wittmer recognized Corvias Maintenance Manager Liz Mitchell for her “outstanding dedication to Fort Bragg during an exceptionally demanding PCS season.”

Mitchell and her team processed over 1,600 home turns during the summer 2026 Permanent Change of Station (PCS), helping inspect, process and prepare residences for incoming families during one of the installation’s busiest times of the year. Up to 650,000 active-duty service members, dependents, and civilians move across the country, or the world, in the annual change of duty station process.
