Corvias Foundation & National Military Family Association Partner to Provide $25,000 in Scholarships to Military Spouses in 2020

East Greenwich, RI (March 4, 2020) Corvias Foundation, a private foundation founded by Corvias CEO John Picerne to support education opportunities for military families, in cooperation with the National Military Family Association (NMFA), a nonprofit that serves military families, today announced its continued partnership to award military spouses with the Corvias Foundation/NMFA Licensure and Certification scholarship.

Thirty percent of employed military spouses work in fields that require licensure or certification, but the unique demands of military life make working in these fields difficult. The Department of Defense recently released a report outlining the employment challenges military spouses face due to a lack of license portability. To address this challenge, Corvias Foundation partnered with NMFA to design a scholarship specifically for military spouses who need assistance covering the cost of licensure or certification.

“Corvias Foundation realizes the growing need to support the unique professional requirements of military spouses,” said Maria Montalvo, executive director of Corvias Foundation. “Due to frequent moves, military spouses who work in specialized fields, such as psychology or nursing, must pay for and obtain new licenses or certifications when they move in order to continue working. As a response, we partnered with NMFA to create a scholarship program specifically designed to address this obstacle.”

Military spouses will be eligible for the scholarship if they are one of the following:

  • A spouse of a member of the seven Uniformed Services with a valid military ID
  • Married to an active duty, reserve, guard, retired, medically retired, wounded or fallen service member (must be a service-related wound, illness, injury or death that took place after September 11, 2001)
  • A dual service military spouse
  • A divorced spouse, but only if they receive 20/20/20 benefits

“NMFA is grateful for Corvias Foundation’s continued commitment to military spouses and their careers,” said Ashish Vazirani, NMFA Executive Director and Chief Executive Officer. “When we invest in military spouses, we invest in military families. This scholarship helps provide military spouses with the resources they need to continue their careers, meet their professional goals, and support their families.”

Chosen military spouses will be awarded a scholarship later this year. Scholarship recipients will receive funds that will go towards the procurement of professional certifications and licenses to enhance their employability. To learn more about the scholarship and begin the application process, spouses can visit the scholarship’s website here.

Following this year’s scholarship awards, more than $100,000 in funding through NMFA and Corvias Foundation’s partnership will have been provided to military spouses since the inception of the scholarship in 2015.
