Members of the Foundation and 2012 military family scholarship recipients honored at Fenway Park in pre-game ceremonies

East Greenwich, RI (July 24, 2012)Recipients of scholarships from the Our Family for Families First Foundation and members of the Foundation were honored by the Boston Red Sox in a pre-game ceremony at historic Fenway Park on July 20. The Red Sox recognized 2012 scholarship recipients as well as Foundation scholars who have recently graduated. The Foundation gives academic scholarships to the spouses and children of military service members.

The on-field event, hosted by the Red Sox Foundation, capped off an orientation and awards ceremony held at Boston University to prepare and recognize scholars selected by the Foundation. Orientation topics were designed to help students transition to college life and included subjects such as financial independence, health and nutrition, professionalism, leadership, dorm life, time management and academic advising. Special lessons were also held to teach the students about resources and programs available to them as members of military families. For military families, there is the typical anxiety associated with a child being on their own for the first time, and also the added emotional and financial stresses caused by military moves and deployments.

“The goal of the orientation and awards event is to help the scholarship recipients succeed in their university studies and in their professional careers,” said Maria A. Montalvo, Executive Director of the Our Family for Families First Foundation and Executive Vice President of Campus Relations for Corvias Campus Living. “Family is at the heart of the Foundation mission. We want to make sure the recipients experience that they are part of something special and that we are invested in celebrating their successes and supporting them through challenges.”

The Foundation was founded in 2006 by John Picerne, President and CEO of Corvias Group, a privately-owned, vertically-integrated real estate solutions group dedicated to building strong communities through its two divisions, Picerne Military Housing and Corvias Campus Living. Each year, the Foundation awards 11 $50,000 college scholarships and 20 $5,000 continuing education grants to the children and spouses of active-duty service members. More than $3.5 million in scholarships and grants have been awarded since 2006.

“There are a myriad of scholarships available to children and spouses of services members, but none are as generous to students and supportive of families as the Our Family for Families First Foundation scholarship,” said Katie Newton, a 2012 graduate of Cornell University and 2008 scholarship recipient. “The Foundation connects recipients with mentors and provides constant support. They help students set goals and then rejoice in our accomplishments.”

The Our Family for Families First Foundation has partnered with the Red Sox Foundation since 2010 as a supporter of the Run to Home Base event, which raises money to support wounded veterans returning from Iraq and Afghanistan. The event raises funds for the Red Sox Foundation and Massachusetts General Hospital Home Base Program, which provides clinical care and support services for veterans with Post Traumatic Stress Disorder and Traumatic Brain Injuries and their families.

The Foundation was also recently recognized at the White House by First Lady Michelle Obama as the People’s Choice winner of the first Joining Forces Community Challenge. The challenge spotlighted citizens and organizations with a demonstrated, genuine and deep desire to be of service to military families. To learn more, go towww.ourfamilyfoundation.org
